SAN JUAN DEL SUR, NIC

Once legally admitted we headed to Big Wave Dave’s to get the shirt and the “best burger in San Juan del Sur.”

There was no Big Wave Dave Wave T-shirt. Bummer. But good burger.

“READY? One, two three, GO!”and holding onto lines we leapt off Moody Blues’ swimstep naked, into the warm saltwater in celebration of sailing across the border from El Salvador into Nicaragua. It was like we were the only people in the whole wide world except for Hiatus in front of us. I didn’t look to see if they were naked too . . .
There aren’t that many safe anchorages in Nicaragua. It’s Pacific coastline is about 186 miles long. Storms can close the whole coastline down. They are affected by Papagayo winds that especially nail the southern portion where Lago de Nicaragua - the largest area of freshwater in Central America is found and the low isthmus below it. It’s a gorgeous rugged coastline. We bee-lined it to Estero Aserradores where Marina Puesta del Sol is. It is Nicaragua’s first real marina and it was delightful and very accomodating. It too had a bar to cross, but it was relatively easy. Once inside the current was stronger, so coming into the slip required the bow thruster and a half dozen dock hands. The marina had a restaurant/bar, showers, laundry, a dock side pool and a pool an interesting walk across fields to the ocean side. Lots of cruisers were there so Tropical Dance put together a party at the beach pool area. It was fun.
